Germall II
The Latest Advance in Cosmetic Preservation
EFFECTIVE PRESERVATION
Germal II is the newest and most active member of the imidazolidinyl urea family of preservatives. It is superior because it has a wider spectrum of activity against troublesome “house” organisms and it is especially effective against Pseudomonas and other gram-negative bacteria, including mutated types.
SAFE AND EASY TO USE FOR SHAMPOOS, CREAMS, AND LOTIONS
Germall II is water-soluble, stable, and colorless. It is effective over a wide pH range and does not require special handling. Germall II is not inactivated by nonionic surfactants, ethoxylated compounds, or proteins. It is highly water soluble and oil insoluble; therefore, the oil/water partition coefficient is excellent for the preservation of emulsions. It is toxicologically safe for both leave-on and wash-off products, and is compatible with essentially all cosmetic ingredients.
ELIMINATES PRESERVATION PROBLEMS AND IS COST EFFECTIVE
Germall II is more cost effective than most preservatives being offered for shampoos or other cosmetic products. It solves many problems of cosmetic preservation, such as: differences between test microorganisms and mutated types; inactivation effects of emulsifiers, proteins, and other cosmetic ingredients on antimicrobials; unexpected appearance in the production plant or water supply of mutant gram-negative bacteria; inadvertent use of a contaminated raw material; occasional lapse in GMP by production personnel; or gradual partition of a preservative from the water phase into the oil phase (Germall II will not migrate out of the water phase).
BROAD SPECTRUM OF ACTIVITY
Germall II has a broad spectrum of activity against standard gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, yeast and mold, as well as against troublesome “house” organisms. It provided effective antimicrobial activity at 0.1 - 0.3%, either alone or in combination with the parabens.

Multiple selling points are seen in this ad. Perhaps the biggest one is that Germall II is effective against gram-negative bacteria (including Pseudomonas). Gram-negative bacteria were a big concern at the time in cosmetics, meaning that Germall II (which is effective against them) would be desirable to manufacturers.
In practice, multiple parabens were used in products to enhance preservation. It seems that different kinds of antimicrobial preservatives can also be used together as well (i.e., Germall II and parabens).
