When Commodore Perry first visited Japan in 1853, Takeda was already 73 years old and planning expansion beyond its home base in Osaka. When Japan opened her doors to the world in 1868, Takeda started to import medicines from the West. Thus began the events which would spawn what is today the world’s (and the United States’) second largest source of vitamins. An independent company with $2 billion in sales for the current year, Takeda boasts of advanced technology unsurpassed by any in the world. It has achieved such breakthroughs as the synthesis of vitamins C, B₁ and others; has developed novel processes for food enrichment; has pioneered in enzymes and antibiotics. These panoramic changes occurred because some things did not change at Takeda—a record of unfailing service and product excellence, a staff of highly-qualified and dedicated scientists and a sincere commitment to a better world through chemistry.
