#80th Anniversary!
##The Great American Steel Drum
Some 80 years ago, circa 1900, the steel drum emerged from the era of wooden ships and wooden barrels. A bulky, bilged prototype of today’s meticulously constructed steel drums, it nonetheless soon demonstrated the same superiority over wooden barrels that steel ships did over wooden ships. And for much the same reasons:
STRENGTH/RELIABILITY/SAFETY
Today more than 51,000,000 modern steel drums are produced annually to provide the shipping containers that are indispensible to US commerce and industry. More essential products- chemicals, petroleum, inks, paints, solvents, foodstuffs, pharmaceuticals… you name it, hazardous and non-hazardous- are packaged in new steel drums than any competitive container! Why? Because on top of Strength, Reliability, and Safety, today’s advanced new steel drum also meets other imperatives of modern packaging and transportation: It’s weatherproof, non-combustible, residue-free, standardized, easier to decorate, stacks higher to save warehouse costs and provides world-wide acceptance! And the lighter-weight types save extra $$ on outbound freight!
In other words, the use benefits that have made the Great Ameria Steel Drum Number One continue to keep it Number One!

[additional notes]
the metaphorical idea of a sturdy material in the comparison of wood to steel
the inclusion of the number ‘51,000,000’ shows that companies are able to hold massive amounts of products/materials reinforcing the marketable quantities/economical value from the steel drum
the product is able to withstand the mileage that may of these foods have to pass in order to reach the facility
more firm form of packaging in comparison to the other advertisements that I’ve seen, this is more durable
the advertisment’s text emphasizes the advantages of using the steel drum in order to show that it can cost less if one uses it as well
instances of American pride- the product seems as if it is nationally backed and the ‘greatest’ amongst other forms of packaging
the icon of the American flag on the steel drum packaging makes it seem like the user is reflecting its pride and honor of the nation- more likely to want to buy a product that emphasizes such
going from the wooden to steel ship gives the consumer a timeline of how technologically advanced America has become over the years and this can be applicable to their storage as well
using the word ‘indispensible’ makes their company seem vital to the industry against competitors
reflection of the growing demands of the food industry to the point that food now has to be put in large drums
consumer growth continues to be reflected
What are the effects of steel drum packaging on food?
hygienic barrier: it can make food last longer due to its airtight conditions
there can be migration into food if not lined properly
I find it interesting that plastic liners still need to be used in order to preserve whatever the steel drum contains: plastic continues to be encouraged in this instance
can cause metallic transfer into whatever product it may be holding
What kinds of chemicals are found in steel that chemists might have to produce and how much does tha cost?
iron ore, manganese, sulfur, carbon
Steel production costs range from $380-650 per tonne: this is a pretty fair trade considered that it is about 2,000 pounds of steel that can be produced for the industry
Themes: packaging, efficiency, compatibility, transportation, durability, massive quantity, nationality, American pride, technological advancement
