A new twist on licorice.

Anethole—the anise/licorice flavoring ingredient—requires strict quality control during distillation to minimize undesirable components such as cis-anethole. The Terpene and Aromatics Division of Union Camp has developed unique distillation methods. These techniques not only enhance the odor and taste properties but also produce an unusually high quality trans-anethole product. The cis-anethole content of Union Camp’s Anethole USP never exceeds 0.3% and averages less.
In addition, Union Camp has the resources of a billion-dollar corporation, supporting long-term supply commitments for basic raw materials. This better enables us to ensure the constant supply of Anethole through fluctuating market conditions.

This ad relies on a visual pun of the twisted licorice representing both the anethole flavor and product innovation. The imagery blends food familirity and industrial chemistry. The licorice is playful while the text shifts into a technical discussion around isomers and distillation control. The ad normalizes the idea that flavor is chemically optimized rather than naturally derived.
The bright yellow background reinforced visibility and optimism, making the ingredient seem approachable and lively.
In 1982, Union Camp acquired Bush Boake Allen (BBA) from Glidden bringing BBA's aroma chemical portfolio (including anethole) under Union Camp's ownership.
Anethole is a natural, aromatic compound found in anise, fennel, and star anise, responsible for their distinct, sweet licorice flavor. The cis-isomer is less stable and significantly more toxic (15-38 times) than the more common trans-isomer.
